Book Review: Becoming

I kicked off 2018 by finishing Claire McCaskill’s memoir Plenty Ladylike, so it’s only fitting to close out the year with another inspiring woman in politics – Michelle Obama. Her book, Becoming, was by no means a quick read for me. There was SO much going on, so much to think about and take in. I already knew Michelle was amazing, but this book shows how really, really amazing she is, but also how human she is. Continue reading

You didn’t get the job…now what?

The dreaded email has arrived. You applied, got through the phone interview, killed the in-person interview, online personality test, whatever else and you were SURE you were getting it, right? Yep. I’ve been there too. It sucks. You invested emotionally in the process, you manifested this opportunity and you let yourself picture what it would be like to work there. I am so, so sorry. What do you do now? The next steps are important for you both personally and professionally. So here are some of my suggestions…

Celiac – it’s not a dietary preference, it’s a disease

In November 2013 I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. This is a severe allergy to wheat and gluten. I get a lot of questions when I tell people I have celiac – “What CAN you eat?” or “How do you survive?” or “How did you know you had it?”

To answer the first two questions – I eat a lot of meat, rice and veggies. I just have to be careful with seasonings and sauces. And I am surviving a lot better than I would be if I was still eating wheat.

The how I knew though…that is a much longer answer. Continue reading

My Unintentional Year of Personal Growth

I’ve mentioned before that I’ve moved twice since college. The first was a small college town in Central Illinois. I’ll admit I talk a lot of shit about that little town. No good mall – but lots of places to eat. Lots of growing families starting their lives and obnoxious college kids – not a lot of young unmarried professionals planning their career. Actually most of the young unmarried professionals I’ve known that are on the fast track in their career have moved somewhere else within 3-5 years of living there. It was somewhat diverse, but mostly white.

Getting Fit And Liking It!

At the beginning of 2017 I went to David’s Bridal. I was in search of a dress to wear as Maid of Honor in my sorority sister’s wedding. Another mutual college friend joined me to take photos and send them real time to the bride. As I was scrolling through the pictures later, one in particular caught my eye. It had been taken from the back and was a strapless dress. My skin was quite literally spilling out the sides of the top of the dress. I immediately weighed myself (Yes, I had been avoiding the scale) and sure enough I was up 10 pounds. No, I was, and am not fat, but I was definitely sloppy. An additional 10 pounds is a lot on my short girl frame. I had not been consistent with my workouts stemming from the busy season at work, six weeks of bronchitis and of course, delicious holiday food over-eating. (We’re all human!) I decided right then and there something had to change and FAST!

WINC Review

I recently signed up for WINC – a personalized wine club. I’d heard about it for a while but just hadn’t signed up yet. I love trying new wines, although I always keep a bottle of my favorites around. I liked that they would suggest wines based on my pallet. When I got my last shipment from The Limited (tear! How can they be closing for good?! But, I digress) there was a promotional card in there for WINC. If I visited winc.com/TheLimited I could get half off my order, so, why not?! It was the perfect time to try it.
